Lori Childers

Eight years ago I came back to painting full-swing, and about two-years ago, in 2021, my painting took a leap, a good one. This work is vastly more complex, more ambitious and bold in its contemporary vision. I’m juxtaposing recognizable objects within and over an abstract imagined space/landscape. The sense of gravity is lightened and the images transcend in and out, over and about the surface. I’m pleased with the development, but the trick is to continue to be brave and keep from conforming to the normal conventions of composition and gravity, andstill make a good painting, a better painting. It’s tricky, but possible.

“Lori Childers joins representation and abstraction in dreamy, fragmented compositions to emulate our conception of memory. Lori awakens our relationship with the “familiar.” By utilizing roughhewn strokes and ghostly abstract forms, the recognizable imagery that once resonated with us– one that represents comfortability and a sense of feeling at home– becomes almost estranged in a way that feels like a slipping memory. Lori channels this phenomenon by capturing it through painting, cementing the haziness of our memories in real-time through a single, nostalgic image for the viewer to emotionally connect with.” — Mia Reich, Art director at Waterworks Sarasota.

“It’s something I feel when I look at your work ... a unique point of view ... confidence without arrogance. Your work (especially your more recent work) seems to know exactly what it’s supposed to be and that’s exactly what it is.” — Recent studio visitor and new collector.
